As Usual, 4Kids Misses the Point
"Here's the good news: Tokyo Mew Mew has been licensed.
Here's the bad news: 4Kids did it. So get ready for "Hollywood Mew Mew."
That's right, folks. As ANN is reporting, 4Kids has licensed and will, of course, Americanize it to get Tokyo Mew Mew on television.
Most telling is a quote from Al Kahn, the CEO of 4Kids, who says, "By the time we localize the programs kids don't even know they're from Japan any more."
Indeed. And that's precisely the problem.
First off, let me get past the notion that the reason I find that statement deplorable is because anime is superior to everything else: I'm not arguing that (better in some respects, but there's nothing that makes anime inherently superior just by virtue of being from Japan). The reason it's detestable is that 4Kids seems to be under the impression that kids need to be insulated from the show through localization.
You see, here's the dirty little secret that they won't
say: "4Kids actually thinks that kids are stupid.""
Man, I don't really watch much anime on TV (well, I might catch whr, wolf's rain, and gits:sac later) so I don't really know much about 4kids, but GAWD, I wish they'd grow some balls. I'm not that much of a purist myself, but, what the hell? Eh, anime in America is crazy. XD After all, you don't see people in Japan crying about these things, do you? :p

Monday, ugh, I actually got up at FOUR A.M. for some reason, and had a good
while to sit around before I had to leave for school. I got in an episode of
Summer Snow, a very good show, so far. Oguri Shun as Jun, who is a boy with
problems, and is among other things, shy, and bad with women.. Just like his role
in GTO!! Yes, he does a good job with these roles. Yuki is really cute, played by
Hirosue Ryoko, a newbie office lady with heart problems Since I stink at
synopses, here's one I stole from KIKU TV, which is a Hawaiian TV station that
actually aired it subtitled, among other jdrama. (lucky Hawaiians! :p) :
"A love story between a young man who has been forced to grow up too quickly, and
a young woman with an ailment that has placed restrictions on her life. Natsuo
(Domoto Tsuyoshi) has been looking after his younger brother and sister since the
death of their parents. He has also been running the family bicycle shop. Yuki
(Hirosue Ryoko) becomes the only person in the world in whom he can confide. For
Yuki, Natsuo becomes the catalyst that has her trying to break out of her
cocoon."
Nicely put KIKU TV!! That's exactly what I would have said! (^_^;;
Hmmm, sometime this week I need to go to the mall and pick up volume 1 & 2 of
the Azumanga Daioh manga, even though I cringe at the thought of Osaka with a
bronx-ish accent. >_<;; I cringe even more at the thought of hearing it when the
dub is released, whenever that is. Yes, the manga was very enjoyable, with it's
4-koma goodness, and Ill need it portable for next week's finals, I can never
quite enjoy the magazines they give you when you're finished with your test, I
know we must save the whales!!! XD
In funnier news, my desktop publishing teacher made our final project very fun,
we get to take a magazine, and duplicate it with photoshop and pagemaker, but
change the title, subheading, images, etc, etc, and integrating images of
ourselves into it. Mine's "BIGSIGHT!", an informal magazine covering the event's
held at Tokyo Big Sight, or more
importantly, COMIKE. :3 The guy who sits beside me, is doing a Go magazine,
called PlayGo.. Hehe, and yes, even if the teacher doesn't know what the hell our
topics are about, we'll make up for it with our design, we're her favorites, for
whatever reason, and our designs are rather mediocre, but hey, whatever passes
me! t(^_^t)
Layout:This is version 6 of Kyoji's Blog, "abenobashi", because I love
Abenobashi Mahou, and I thought this picture of Satoshi and Arumi was hillarious.
:D I used photoshop 7 and notepad to create this website, and it runs best in at
1024x768 resolution.
Blog:What can I say? It's your average fanboi blog.:p I've got some really
cool links and fanlists, though.
